Fabric Types

Do you know what your clothing is made out of? The clothing industry has grown substantially over the last thirty years. Every year, 80 billion garments are produced, and around 80 pounds of clothing per American per year ends up in the landfill. That’s a lot of clothes and a lot of waste.

By learning about the general fibers used in clothing, you can more easily pick out pieces that will be durable, sustainable, and save you money in the long run! It’s important to note that not all clothing is made the same and doesn’t serve the same purpose. So, here is the story on common fibers you’ll find in our apparel and why we love them!

Merino Wool

Why we love it: Often used as a base layer, this natural fiber is moisture-wicking, anti-odor, and breathable. Oh, and it keeps you at just the right warmth. Snag a pair of merino wool socks and never go back!

Used in: Socks, baselayers, sweaters, etc.

Tencel

Why we love it: Who knew trees could make such soft clothing? Grab a Tencel tee and feel how soft it can be. Made out of sustainably sourced wood, Tencel is leading the way in sustainable and comfortable clothing. People love this fiber so much that they are even sleeping on Tencel sheets! Lyocell and Modal fibers are also a part of the Tencel fam.

Used in: Shirts, denim, footwear, etc.

Hemp

Why we love it: A durable, breathable, and soft natural fiber hemp is able to be quickly reproduced and is affordable. What isn’t used from the hemp plant for clothing can be used in other industries, so there is zero waste of the plant.

Used in: Shirts, shorts, pants, etc.

Organic Cotton

Why we love it: Cotton has gotten a bad rap, but for some uses it’s an amazing natural fiber that’s soft and breathable. Who doesn’t own a favorite cotton t-shirt? However, pesticides and other chemicals used to produce it were causing major harm to the environment. You can rest assured when you purchase organic cotton that you are not only helping the environment, but also the many workers exposed to the
farming process.

Used in: Denim, shirts, pants, etc.

Recycled Nylon

Why we love it: Nylon is known for its strength and durability, so you will find this fiber in many lightweight and more technical pieces. It’s also moisture-wicking and anti-order, so you’ll find it in a lot of athletic apparel too.

Used in: Vests, jackets, pullovers, sweaters, etc.

Recycled Polyester

Why we love it: Making use of recycled plastic, this synthetic fiber is often found in active-wear pieces. Known for being moisture-wicking and breathable, it is often blended with other materials, such as cotton, for a soft and durable fit.

Used in: Shirts, jackets, sweaters, fleece, etc.
